The activities follow are activities I attended as a Teacher Training here at Hokkaido University of Education, Kushiro Campus. You can  also try  some of the activities  and  integrate it on your teaching.

FOSSIL HUNTING

With Teacher Sakai, masters students and  college student of our department,  we went to Shiranuka  (please see Map of Hokkaido in related links) to search for stone that contains fossils. Our teacher and 3rd year students teaches us techniques to break a stone into half. Fortunately many of us found fossil of leaves and shell inside the stone. The shells are evidence that  the place were covered by sea water million years ago. (Click here for more photos).

These class are special because  Teacher Sakai serves as  a demonstration teacher for new techniques and strategies in teaching and presenting interesting experiments. GOLD SIEVING

The Science Center Officers of Monbetsu (See Map on the Related Link)  initiate to teach Educators on how to find gold in the river of Monbetsu. We use the old style  in gold sieving using only a black  basin (bowl)  and a shovel to get soil in the river. It was hard but everyone enjoyed it specially they get grains of gold in the river after the activity. (Click here for more photos)

SMELTING STEEL USING TATARA

TATARA— is a traditional Japanese furnace use in smelting iron and steel (Wikipedia.com).

This summer, Teacher Sakai was invited in various places to demonstrate and teach teachers and students how to smelt steel using TATARA. I have given opportunity to assist  together with my classmate/s in his demonstrations and learn how to smelt steel. To smelt a steel in TATARA you need lots of charcoal, iron sand (Fe3O4) and powdered sea shell (CaCO3). (Click here for more photos)
